Shockwave Therapy for Foot Health

Many patients find these foot conditions to be extremely painful, particularly when taking the first steps of the morning and after sitting.

The condition may be temporary due to trauma or strain.  It can also become a chronic condition.  Shockwave therapy effectively treats chronic conditions to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Shockwave Therapy is considered a “break through” treatment that can make common problems like heel pain virtually obsolete. Many people with chronic pain problems are turning to shockwave therapy to find relief from their pain. Statistically, over 90 percent of patients that receive this therapy experience a reduction in their pain. In patients that suffered from challenging plantar fasciitis and heel pain related problems, the pain reduction was remarkable. Nearly all patients have successful results with as little as 3-4  treatments of shockwave.

How does ESWT work?

ESWT generates pulses of high pressure sound that travel through the soft tissues. The ESWT device is coupled to the skin via water gel pads. For reasons that are not fully understood soft tissue and bone subjected to to these high pressure energy pulses heal stronger. It is thought that ESWT works by stimulating nerves “to close the gate” to pain impulses sent to the brain. It is sometimes thought of as activating a type of reset button that re-calibrates pain perception and breaks the inflammatory cycle while stimulating repair of the damaged tissues. ESWT pulses have been shown scientifically to stimulate fibre blasts- the cells responsible for the healing of connective tissue and to stimulate osteoblasts - the cells responsible for bone healing and also shown to break down pathological calcification deposits. ESWT devices evolved from lithotripters - shock wave devices used to treat kidney stones.

Is ESWT safe?
